From Dragon Crew to Driver Recruiter
Stan Chew
My involvement with the CNY parade started when I was attending St Mary’s Chinese School. The parade committee needed volunteers to hold the Golden Dragon and I was a part of the Dragon crew through high school. During those years, the parade only went down Grant Ave., and now, it is a spectacular, televised event that is viewed by millions.
Fast forward years later, my friends Jerry and Beverly Lee asked me to recruit drivers to pull the floats. Working at UPS, I was able to get about 25 drivers to volunteer every year for 15 years. Their help was an important part of the parade. It was always a fun day for all and most of them returned year after year.
Over the years, I’ve met a lot of very nice people, Wayne Hu and his family, Harlan, float builders Dave and Stephanie, and many more.
It was truly an honor to have been a part of the Chinese New Year Parade. May the Year of the Tiger Parade be another huge success!
