Creating Digital Equity Together for the Year of the Dragon

01 Creating Digital Equity Together Comcast SF Chinese New Year

Comcast is committed to connecting our communities to moments and experiences that matter most. For the past five years, Comcast has been a proud partner and supporter of the Chinese New Year Festival and Parade in San Francisco, the largest celebration of its kind in the United States and outside of Asia.

Beyond these festivities, Comcast’s investment and support of the Chinatown community continues all year round. Comcast is dedicated to creating a future of unlimited possibilities by making strides to uplift the communities we serve in partnership with local community organizations and programs, such as Self Help for the Elderly, the Community Youth Center of San Francisco, and Cameron House.

To close the digital divide and bring our elders up to speed, Comcast has partnered with Self-Help for the Elderly support their program at the Lady Shaw Senior Center in Chinatown, San Francisco. Since 2010, Self Help for the Elderly has partnered with Comcast to create digital equity in the Senior community. Together, Comcast and Self Help for the Elderly launched the inter-generational digital connectors program, which trained younger generations to provide digital literacy training to older generations to empower them with digital skills on the latest technology. This program gives youth the opportunity to connect with the elderly and provide personalized training to those who need it. Beyond the intergenerational program, Comcast has provided Self Help for the Elderly with grants, funds, and laptop donations to support digital literacy training for the greater community.

Comcast has also partnered with the Community Youth Center of San Francisco (CYC) to support local youth and their families through the pandemic and beyond. Located in the Willy “Woo Woo” Wong Playground and Clubhouse, the CYC works with youth from 5 years old all the way to 25 years old, offering educational support, youth leadership development, workforce development, and behavioral health programs to equip them with the tools they need to succeed on and off the screen. Since 2021, Comcast has partnered with the CYC to establish and maintain an onsite Comcast Lift Zone, providing the community center and the families they serve with free WiFi access. This Lift Zone acts as a remote learning center, providing students with an environment where they can safely and fully participate in educational opportunities and the digital economy.

This past year, Comcast awarded Cameron House a $25,000 digital equity grant to support digital education and equipment for underserved populations in underserved areas like Chinatown. Celebrating 150 years of unwavering community service and empowerment of local families, Cameron House is a multi-service agency that serves the San Francisco Chinese community to build strength and resilience through family-centered programs. This grant will be used to provide additional skill building classes to youths and seniors, such as: resume and cover letter writing workshops, graphic design workshops, how to create a simple funding proposal, basic coding and programming classes, and ESL classes.

Cameron House is also a Community Hub in the heart of Chinatown. Powered by Comcast Business, Community Hubs are free, WiFi-connected neighborhood spaces to help connect underserved families to the Internet so they can fully participate in educational opportunities and the digital economy. They provide Internet access on-the-go and help students participate in distance learning. The Community Hubs program is part of Comcast’s Project UP – a comprehensive initiative to advance digital equity and build a future of unlimited possibilities.

As we enter the Year of the Dragon, Comcast hopes to embody the persevering, courageous spirit of the Dragon and continue creating digital equity together as a community. Comcast wishes you and your loved ones a Happy Chinese New Year. May 2024 bring good fortune, health, and prosperity to us all!
