Restoring the Glow

In the heart of Chinatown, the red lanterns that adorn Grant Avenue have become iconic. They reflect the area’s unique identity and culture, enchant its visitors, and contribute to the residents’ sense of safety at night. But earlier this year, heavy rain, strong winds, and hail tore through and damaged these cherished symbols.

The community leaped into action and raised $25,000 toward a restoration project. When Alaska Airlines heard that there was still another $20,000 needed, a donation was quickly arranged. Many Alaska employees live and work in the Bay Area and, as a sponsor of the San Francisco Chinese New Year Festival and Parade, the company saw an opportunity to have a meaningful impact.

On August 8th, the Chinatown Merchants Association, alongside Alaska Airlines, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the restoration of the lanterns. The familiar warm glow was back, just like the resilient spirit that makes this neighborhood so special.
